The day’s events at The Borough of Eye Bowls Club started at 9.30am with the draw being undertaken by Suffolk Bowls (BE) President David Jolly and Open League Chair Richard Anderson, overseen by all 4 team captains. Cornard BC vs Thurlton BC ‘A’ drew rinks 1 to 4 and Borough of Eye BC ‘A’ vs Laxfield BC drawing rinks 5 to 8.

The green was in excellent condition on its unfamiliar 8 rink setting, despite being a little bit wet from a shower an hour before play began.

Thurlton fielded their legendary 3 generation set from the Cook family which had a nip and tuck game right to the end just losing out to Cornard 16- 15. The match ended with the overall team score of Thurlton Bowls Club 60 - Cornard Bowls Club 63 with Cornard going through to the final.

The Borough of Eye team struggled a little on home turf losing out to Kings Head Laxfield Bowls Club 55 – 77, with Laxfield BC cementing their place in the final.

After a hearty lunch provide by Paul Jackson and his team, play resumed with the final between Laxfield and Cornard on the favoured 7 rink setting. Play across all 4 rinks was fairly consistent until the 12th end when the Cornard set of D. Mumford, D Dingleby, skipped by M Wickenden. edged ahead scoring 3 threes and a six on consecutive ends aiding the teams march to victory, with Cornard winning 2 of the 4 rinks.

Final rink scores were 20 – 12, 17 – 22, 32 – 6 and 11 – 25 with Cornard BC winning the shield with a match total of 80 to 65.

Congratulations Cornard Bowls Club!
