Who said bowls is a summer sport? A chilly, overcast Northamptonshire Sunday morning in June so it must be the start of the Balcomb Trophy!
Hosted by Abington BC, with a lovely looking green that appeared to play consistently well, Suffolk got off to a mixed start.
On rink 4, the set skipped by Joe Sims took an early lead to be 10 - 4 up at the midway point while on rink 5 the home team, skipped by the experienced Vernon Gearey, took an early breakaway to be 14 - 5 up at the turn, giving Northants a slim 3 shot advantage.
However, Richard Leeder and the boys, with one eye on the other scoreboard, ground their way back into contention and fought tooth and nail to keep their rink under control. While this was going on, the Suffolk rink 4 set were easing ahead to finally finish up 26 - 12
Back on rink 5, a last minute resurgence gave Northants some hope but they could only take their final rink win score to 24 - 15 which gave Suffolk victory by 5 shots. A great team win by two rinks working well together
This win means our Balcomb team, lead by player/manager John Rednall, have qualified for the Regional Finals at Wellingborough BC, Northamptonshire on Sunday 23rd June. Our semi-final is against Norfolk and play starts at 10.00 am. The Regional Final takes place in the afternoon at 2.00 pm. All supporters are more than welcome
